Lakkidi, the gateway of Wayanad

Lakkidi known as the gateway of Wayanad is situated 700 m above sea level, at the crest of the Thamaraserri ghat pass.

This hill station is one of the highest locations in Wayanad and it registers the second highest rainfall in the world.

The Pokkot lake, the Edakkal caves with its ancient carvings and Wayanad wildlife sanctuary are near Lakkidi.

The Phantom Rock

Phantom Rock named so because of it’s skull head shape, is locally called Cheengeri Mala and Thalappara.

Phantom Rock as the name suggests is blocks of huge rocks in the shape of a human skull.

The surroundings have lot of greeneries and rocks.

Phantom Rock is formed out of huge metamorphic rocks.

Main Attraction: Phantom Rock has a special skull head shape.

Chembra Peak

Chembra Peak the highest peak in Wayanad, stands at a height of around 2100 meters above sea level. At a distance of 14 km from Kalpetta, the Chembra Peak is a part of the Wayanad hill ranges in the Western Ghats, adjoining the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu and Vellarimala in Kozhikode district in Kerala. The elevation makes it an ideal spot for trekking and mountain climbing

Edakkal Cave

Edakkal Cave - The Edäkkal cave in the Ambukuthy Mountain near Sulthän Bathery, famous for the Cave Carvings, which is know as one of the oldest caves in the world, which speaks of a highly civilized people of pre-historic age above 10,000 years back.

Meenmutty Falls

Meenmutty Falls - It is a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 300 metres. Meenmutty Falls, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in the Wayanad District, is a 2 km hike though the jungle from the main Ooty Road. It is Kerala's second largest waterfall and the one most unspoiled in its natural setting. Each of its three tiers requires a separate hike through a moist, deciduous forest.

Kuruva Island

Kuruva Island also called Kuruvadweep is a popular attraction in Wayanad. this uninhabited Island with 950 acres of evergreen forest on the tributaries of east flowing river Kabani, is an ideal picnic spot.

The Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary

The Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is located over an area of 344.44 square kilometers and is home to wildlife such as Gaur, sloth bears, sambhar, elephants, reptiles, tigers, spotted deer, monkeys, panthers, jungle cats, civet cats, wild dogs, bison, lizards, bears, wild pigs, leopards,lion-tailed macaque, and other animals.

The Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary also provides a home to various species of deer, monkeys, and birds. The flora of the sanctuary includes deciduous and evergreen forests. One of the best ways to explore the sanctuary is an elephant ride.

 Pazhassi Raja tomb

Pazhassi Raja tomb is a monumental tomb with a great historical place. The Pazhassi Raja was considered as the ‘Lion of Kerala’ was the first to ignite guerilla warfare techniques against the British. It was in memory of this valiant ruler, who died in 1805 that the magnificent tomb was constructed.

Jain temple Wayanad

Jain temple Wayanad is known to be constructed in the thirteenth century. It is an important tourist spot for Jains and multi-cultural guests. This is an excellent piece of Jain architecture. It is also known by the name Ananthanatha swami temple. Ananthanatha swami temple is an excellent spiritual spot. This Jain temple Wayanad is dedicated to the great Jain saint by the name Ananthanatha swami. There is an interesting reason behind this name being given to Ananthanatha swami temple. King Tippusultan stored his ammunition in this fort during his reign. That is why this place is called Tippu’s fort. Another name given to this Jain temple is Sultan’s battery.

 Banasura Sagar Dam

Banasura Sagar Dam The largest earth dam in India, famous for speed boating. It is the largest earthen dam in India and the second largest in Asia and an ideal starting point for hikes into the surrounding scenic mountains

 Pakshipathalam 

Pakshipathalam - the very name of the place refers to its large population of birds. Here virgin forests, rivulets, and steep hills together offer challenging avenues for trekking. A cave that rishis (saints) are believed to have used for meditation in ancient times, has become a major attraction for tourists.

Close by is Kuruvadweep, an island (dweep) well known for its rare ecology. Located 17 km from Mananthavady, Kuruvadweep is a 950 acre stretch of evergreen forests on the banks of the Kabani river, and home to rare species of birds, orchids and herbs.

Soochipara waterfall

Soochipara waterfall which is also called as Sentinel waterfalls is situated in Wayanad. The waterfalls from a height of 100 to 300 ft and is 3 tiered. It is one of the biggest waterfalls in our state. In the three tiers of the waterfall, the first one which is the longest is the one which could be reached easily. It is a risky task to reach the second waterfall and only adventurous travelers take the risk to reach to the third waterfall. These three falls lie in meenmutty, soochippara and kanthanpara. Finally they combine and then fall into the Chaliyar River. There is a pool below the falls where the tourists can take a dip. Tree houses are constructed here and the visitors can stay here if needed.

The cliff called as Sentinel rock is ideal for rock climbing which has a height of about 200 m. This waterfall situated in Vellarimala is surrounded by dense forests. On the way to this falls one can enjoy the beauty of the tea estates in Wayanad.

 Thirunelly Temple 

 Thirunelly Temple About 5000 years old Siva temple located in the midest of brahamagiri hills. It is Known as Thekkan Kashi/Dakshina Kashi (Kasi of the South) and surrounded by Kambamala, Karimala and Varadiga. The idols is in the form of Chathurbhuja. The Shrine is shielded with 30 granite columns and the ground is paved with huge square pieces of granite. The crystal clear water of the Papanashini river running downhill add to the enchantment of the place. A short walk from Thirunelli temple is the clear mountain spring known as Papanasini. A ritual dip here is believed to wash one away of all worldly sins.

Pookot Lake

Pookot Lake, a natural freshwater lake surrounded by evergreen forests and rolling hills is located 3 km from the south of Vythiri town. The most beautiful tourist spot in the whole of Wayanad. The lake nestles in the lap of mountains surrounding it. Boating in Pookot Lake is a memorable experience. Tall trees and dense forests that line along the pathway around the lake provide a visual treat. A freshwater aquarium with a large variety of fish is an added attraction. Tourists can also avail of boating facilities, to enjoy the serene waters of the enchanting lake. A children's park and a shopping center for handicrafts and spices are some of the few attractions of the region, providing recreational facilities to the visitors.
